What happens in the video
The original runs 21.67 seconds and has exactly six shots. We timed the cuts frame by frame; the viral cat version cuts within a fifth of a second of the same points, which is why it reads as the same video.
| Time | Shot |
|---|---|
| 0:00 | A screams. A is right up at the lens, clutching their head, eyes shut, mouth wide open. B dances in the background. |
| 0:05 | A reaches for you. Both hands come straight at the camera — the wide-angle close-up everyone screenshots. |
| 0:07 | The swap. Hard cut: now B is in front, hands in their hair, screaming at the sky. A dances behind. |
| 0:14 | Together. Both of you, full body, dancing side by side — A on the left, B on the right. |
| 0:16 | Low angle. The camera drops to the ground and looks up at you against the sky. |
| 0:19 | Hands to the lens. You both lean in and reach for the camera to end it. |
The joke is the contrast: one person falling apart, the other having the time of their life — then the roles flip. The screaming is visual; there is no scream on the audio, just the song.
Where it came from
- Apr–May 2024: The first wave: “Dance like it's the 80s”. TikTok users ask their parents to dance to Smalltown Boy the way they did when they were young. A mom version passes about 62M views, a dad version about 43M.
- Jul 2026: The parents clips are still being reposted — one Reddit repost collects about 7.8K upvotes.
- Aug 4, 2026: Elvira and mr_unvrs post “Don't cry. Dance!” on Instagram: she screams into the camera while he dances behind her, they swap, then dance together. About 174K likes.
- Oct 2, 2026: Bellvtrix posts the same 21 seconds with two cats, made with Higgsfield Genjutsu and crediting the original dancers. It passes 1.25M likes and 9K comments.
- Oct 4, 2026: mr_unvrs posts the original and the cat version side by side; by the creator's own count, 1.3M views for the original and 17.3M for the AI version.
- Oct 7, 2026: Character remakes follow — a Zoolander version moves the dance indoors and keeps the same structure.

The 2024 parents challenge is a different trend
Search “smalltown boy dance” and you will also find the 2024 TikTok trend of asking your mom or dad to “dance like it's the 80s” to this song — see this mom and this dad. Those are single, full-body, unscripted dances at home. The 2026 dance is a duet with a fixed structure: two people, a scream, a swap, a shared ending.
The song: Bronski Beat, “Smalltown Boy” (1984)
“Smalltown Boy” was Bronski Beat's debut single, sung in Jimmy Somerville's falsetto. It tells the story of a young gay man who leaves his hometown and family because he isn't accepted there — a heavy song for a dance trend, which is part of why the over-the-top scream works. The official video is on the London Records channel.
How to film it yourself
- Find a plain wall or fence with some light on it. Use the phone's main wide camera, held at chest height.
- A stands right up at the lens; B stands three or four metres behind.
- For about seven seconds A screams silently, hands on the head, then reaches both hands at the camera. B dances.
- Cut. Swap places: B screams at the lens, A dances behind.
- Cut to both of you full body, dancing side by side; add a quick low-angle shot from the ground, then both reach for the camera.
- Post it and add the sound: In TikTok or Reels tap "Add sound", search "Smalltown Boy Bronski Beat" and pick the version most posts use.
